Description
-

Flux is an experimental 3D live cinema that explores the emotions of turbulence and acceptance. It features improvised camera and scene controls in a game engine alongside a live music performance.

Context

Flux is directed by filmmakers Kevin Peter He & Jake Oleson. The project originated from the desire to inject the expressiveness and visceral emotions of live electronic music into cinema.

The piece is created live in a 3D game engine, with both visual and sound performers improvising to control camera movement, editing, and animation of scene components, such as architecture and lighting, to tell a narrative that unfolds over the duration of the performance.

Story

The performance explores emotions of navigating through turbulent times and the process of acceptance through the story of an android discovering what it means to be human..

It opens with a character falling through an endless tunnel with a mysterious light guiding them through the turbulence. After the tunnel breaks down, they land in a lush forest environment and learns to embrace the light in their new found environment.

Audiovisual Presentation

Flux presented its first iteration to an audience of 200 people at &Friends, an audiovisual performance night presented by LiveCode NYC and the influential media arts page CreativeCodeArt (107K on Instagram).

Flux is currently being reworked and will be presented as a more directed narrative piece in early 2024.
